Ahead of Festival Season, Depop reveals the hottest trends and most searched-for secondhand pieces on the platform, to take you from the office to the fields of Glasto without costing your wallet, or the planet.

From Beyonce’s reimagining of Americana with Cowboy Carter, to Zendaya’s Tenniscore serves in The Challengers, the ‘it girls’ have been out in full force throughout Spring influencing runways and wardrobes alike.

But as the trend cycle moves at a rapid rate, Depop is seeing shoppers explore contrasting styles for a summer of ever changing moods and moments. Sports Play, Eclectic Prep, 9 to Thrive, Workwear, Rodeo Ready and Romantic Summer encompass the most popular and trending categories on the platform, from streetwear to vintage.

According to Agus Panzoni, Depop’s in-house Trend Specialist, “This summer we are seeing shoppers explore their individuality by fusing together opposite ends of the style spectrum – sportswear and prep, romance and rodeo, in office and out of office. Pre-loved and vintage finds will be crucial to peoples’ exploration of their style identities.”

With over 35 million registered users, Depop’s community of buyers, sellers, and explorers continue to hint at what will be the next “big thing” - far ahead of the masses. For SS24, streetwear plays with different sports aesthetics, minimalism takes on opposing workmodes and fantasy dressing reflects a spectrum of male and female identities.

Sports Play

Football Fever is back for SS24, playing ball with other sports - no real competition here though, it’s more about mixing up sports inspired fashion. Branded colourful jerseys, light track jackets and shorts of all sports are the flashy components of otherwise casual cool outfits, consisting of jorts and simple sneakers. With vintage sportswear one of the most popular categories on Depop, key pieces for the trend include football jerseys, shorts, jorts and sneakers - searches for Onitsuka Tigers were up 200% in April and jorts up 102%. Favourite brands to shop include streetwear labels such as Palace and Aime Leon Dore, and sportswear giants such as Adidas, Nike and New Balance.

Eclectic Prep

With preppy style seeing a huge surge in interest this year, A/W’s Street Smart prep and Gorpcore’s earthy hues combine for smart styles to fit post-match outfits. A happy juxtaposition of vibrant prints and patterns on classic silhouettes paired with chunky footwear bids a warm welcome to vintage-inspired streetwear. This trend mixes and matches streetwear imprints with classic brands, tying in a sportswear edge for a functional and wearable feel. With searches for ‘preppy’ up 730% since January, shoppers are also looking for polo shirts, boat shoes (up 296%) and loafers (up 326%), with top brands to shop including Lacoste and Dior.

9 to Thrive

Leaning into the Office Siren era with a flirty summer twist, silhouettes and suiting are revealing a little more. We’re seeing fashion fans cosplaying corporate in looks better suited for the bar not the boardroom, heralded by runways at Prada and Miu Miu. Blazer-like tops, transparent shirts, ultra-short tailored shorts, and small elegant leather bags are arguably 50% office attire. Mini skirts and kitten heels are key pieces for the trend, with searches for the latter up 40% in April - whilst searches for sheer’ are up 34% since January.

Workwear

While 9 to Thrivers are hardly working in the office, their counterpart Workwear is dressed for manual labour and toiling the land - or just the festival field! Propelled into popularity by hip-hop and now a permanent fixture on the streetwear scene, classic workwear label Carhartt has become one of the most popular brands to shop on Depop, with Stussy’s workwear inspired pieces not far behind. With barn jackets recently given a high fashion makeover at Prada, the trend shows no sign of slowing down. Key pieces to get the look include loose chore jackets, double-knee trousers and sturdy boots in minimalist colours. Either on their own or paired together, they are the epitome of elevated urban casualness.

Rodeo Ready

Last year’s Western styles are riding back to town in full force, as cowboys and cowgirls roam festival fields with rodeo ready outfits. And with Beyonce’s latest country release, the cowboycore trend is continuing strong into the new season, with a 75% increase in searches for denim on Depop. Denim jackets are a popular staple, with a 127% increase in searches since January. For this look, balance a blend of prairie, western and boho elements like broderie anglaise, suede and denim accompanied by western boots or a western hat - yeehaw!

Romantic Summer

Euro summer is back, and even if we’re not wandering around the piazza, shoppers are gravitating towards airy, sheer, romantic styles that ooze dreamy, feminine charm. Polka dots, florals, fruit and holiday-themed patterns on linen sets and bubble hem dresses are the perfect segue into sunny daytime elegance at the riviera or garden party. Go for vintage European labels such as Moschino for the ultimate summer fantasy, or throw on a patterned shirt for an easy way to get the look. High heeled mules are another popular choice - with searches up 300% this month on Depop - as are bubble skirts, with searches up 223% since January.
